Weird Day at Work

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 11:59 pm

Last week i loved my job. I like my job most of the time, actually, and i know that makes me one of the lucky ones.

Monday i hated it. It was a day with a difficult problem, and i didn’t know what was wrong, but was fairly confidant i had done my part correctly. And yet there was still a blame game email thread going around, and very public CYA maneuvers being perpetrated by the other party involved. It was assumed i had fucked up. It was stressful.

Yesterday was simply strange. I was absolved of any blame from Monday’s email fight when the main person i was arguing with was revealed to have neglected two very routine tasks. Very routine. I am relieved in a way, since it wasn’t my fault. But also pretty mad, that someone could be SO confidently wrong that he asked me to RE-DO a three-day task, and he was the one who had messed up.

Another strange thing that happened. I was asked to do a task, which i had completed Monday, and informed the interested party that i was done. But yesterday he asked me three times if i was still working on it. Each time i said no, you can start your part now, but he kept asking. How is one supposed to react to that? Twilight zone.

I’m hopeful that the job will soon turn back into the one that i love. Bad days and weird days aren’t doing it for me.

Witness the Fire Power

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 7:18 am

At work, i am responsible for maintaining a testing environment for a group of testers.  This particular one has been problematic, and we’ve had problems, but yesterday i sent out an email that everything should be “fully operational.”

For the rest of the day, all i could think of was the Death Star from Star Wars.  It was always in various stages of being “fully operational.”

I think the next time i have to send an email of that nature, i will rephrase it to say, “Witness the Fire Power of this fully operational Death Star!… i mean, testing environment!”

A farewell

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 4:42 pm

At work, one of my superiors is leaving for another division within the company.

Before our paths crossed, i was basically toiling in obscurity in one corner of the company.  I didn’t have any special skills, or any deep knowledge of any one thing.  I was exposed to many different things, learned what i needed for the job at hand, and did it.

She changed all that.  She saw i knew a little bit about lots of things, and she gave it a name, agility, and with that, suddenly, it was something of value.  And she gave me a role that was suited to that strength.  And i did well, because i am a decent worker.  And my career has flourished in the wake of it.

She did that.  And she has been a mentor and a friend besides.  And she’s leaving, and that has affected me more than i thought it would.  I cried when i wrote her a congratulations email.  I know our paths will cross again, it’s just… she believed in me.  That has been an amazing gift.

I wish her well.  She will do great things wherever she goes.  I will miss her.

An error message i ran into yesterday at work while troubleshooting a problem:

Highlight of my day.

i’m glad the week is over

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:04 pm

The first week of my new job is finally over. I like it, i do, but man i needed the weekend. I slept like a log last night.

This week, i: started a new job and worked a lot more than i normally do, juggled responsibilities & transition stuff from the old job, learned vi (and a BUNCH of other little things i need to know for the new job), gave my first toastmaster’s speech, played bridge twice, and prepared the house for my parents’ visit this weekend. That seems like a short list in comparison to how i felt when it was over; i was exhausted.

It’s been a tough week, and mostly because of the job stuff. But i’m extremely glad i’m not with my old group anymore. The politics & bullshit surrounding them has just gotten out of control.

Next week is bound to be better.

Outside my comfort zone

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:07 pm

How often do you go outside your comfort zone and do something that you find just a little bit scary?

I don’t do it very often.  I’m very organized.  I like to execute things according to a plan.  I generally like to know what’s going to happen.  I have my routines, and they suit me just fine.

The boss-lady at work recommended i get some speaking experience.  And public speaking is not something in my comfort zone.  I’ve given a few presentations, and i like to think i do okay with plenty of practice.  But i know there are many improvements i could make, and i’m definitely not very good at on-the-spot, high pressure requests for input that require more than a sentence from me.  So i’ve recently joined the ToastMaster’s group at work.

Three weeks now i’ve attended, and yesterday i spoke up for the first time.  It was very weirdly difficult to try and coherently express the ideas that i had in my head, but hadn’t rehearsed at all how to say it.  You wouldn’t think just talking and saying what you think would be that hard.  It’s not hard for everyone.  Lance, for example, has no problem getting in front of a group and talking about bridge.  Me, i have to practice.

Well anyway, it should be an interesting experience.  Definitely outside my comfort zone.  And the ultimate goal is self-improvement, which i strongly believe we should all undertake throughout our lives.

An

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:22 am

An (with a squiggly above the a, but i can’t figure out how to make myspace do it), is a new restaurant on Harrison Avenue in Cary. They call it Asian fushion, Eastern food prepared in the French style. They also have an extensive sushi bar.

My small group at work had our holiday celebration at An last week. I had heard great things about the place, but wasn’t sure what to expect.

The architecture was interesting. Something about the decorating really drew attention to the crisp squareness of the place. All the tables were big and square. It was open and airy though. Crowded, but with enough room to navigate easily around the tables. I found my group way in the back corner.

There were 12 of us for lunch, and my manager ordered three sampler appetizers, which were huge and meant for large groups to share. The platters came with a tiny fishbowl in the middle, with an actual fish swimming around in there. Nice touch, but kind of weird.

The platters each had lots of weird sushi items on them. I am not a sushi person. I have tried it two other times, pressured by friends who insisted i would like it. Never much cared for it. Cooked, hot seafood i can handle. Not the cold and/or raw kind. But here i was, and it seemed sushi was once again being pushed. Well, why not. We had three vegetarians in the group, plus one other who refused to try it, so there was plenty to go around for the other 8 of us.

I first tried the spring roll and small crab cake, which are both inside my comfort zone. Both were good. I then went for something that looked like shrimp – it was pink like cooked shrimp. I tried it and it was amazing. Later i found out it was squid. Good thing i didn’t know that, or i would never have tried it. As it was, i went back for more. I also REALLY liked the two sashimi tuna samples. In fact, i think i liked everything i tried from that platter.

The lesson here is that it must be a truly excellent sushi restaurant, simply because i liked it, where i have never liked sushi before. I can’t critique it intelligently – that’s all i can say.

I ordered the Bento Box for my entree. The spicy crab soup that came before my box was delicious. The curry beef tenderloin was the feature of the Bento Box, and it was also very good. The rest was not remarkable – salas, rice, veggies, spring rolls.

Overall, i was very pleased with my experience. The service was excellent. A couple of us did have a weird experience where our water glasses began to smell like fish or rotten eggs after a few glasses. Not sure why that would happen, but we had to ask for new glasses.

Anyway, give it a try, especially if you like seafood and/or sushi.
