Take the Money and Run

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 7:21 pm

My current infatuation with TV shows is ABC’s new show Take the Money and Run. Thank you to Cindy for telling me about this show!

The premise is this: a team of two is given a briefcase (handcuffed to an arm, no less) full of $100,000 and give one hour to hide it. A second team of two, usually active or retired police veterans, then take the “robbers” into custody for 48 hours. If the briefcase is still in its hiding place 48 hours later, the Robbers win, and get to keep the money. If not, the Cops get to keep it.

The robber are put in jail for the two days, and undergo interrogations by another team of two, the Investigators. The Investigators are the same every episode. The Cops are out in the field, searching, and the Investigators question the Robbers and relay any pertinent info to the Cops.

I love it! The hide part is always fun. So far the contestants seem to always know a little about whatever city they’re in. In the four shows i have seen, one pair of contestants buried the briefcase in a park, one pair stashed it in some bushes, and two pairs hid the money with a friend. I have my plan already figured out – see below.

The interrogation portion seems to be the hardest; all contestants agree. It doesn’t really look that bad, honestly, but the psychology of it is what really fascinates me. In two episodes, one of the Robbers cracked under the pressure of interrogation. The Robbers are separated, of course, and put in small cells that look just like what you would expect a cell to be. In one episode, we saw the Investigators do an interrogation session inside the Robber’s cell with him, invading his personal space. When they left, they took his toothbrush, toothpaste and book he had been reading to pass the time. That Robber later cracked. I really dislike not being able to brush my teeth, but I think i could endure anything for two days.

The rules are this: the Investigators have access to your GPS route, your phone calls and all receipts. There also seem to be some undisclosed rules that we’re not explicitly told about. In one episode, we heard an Investigator remind a Robber, “You know that you do not have the right to remain silent, right?” So it seems you can’t go on the show and then just give the Investigators the silent treatment. I guess that wouldn’t make for good TV. It’s interesting, then, because the Robbers have to either tell the truth or make up a lie, and then the Investigators try to decipher the differences.

I also wonder if there are other undisclosed rules. Could i trespass on someone’s property? Do i need to get permission from a friend to go in their house or yard? Could i knock on a stranger’s door? Could i leave it in the trunk of a friend’s car? No one has done any of those things, so i don’t know.

Meanwhile the Cops are out there retracing your route and in some cases, literally beating the bushes.

My plan – assuming it was in Raleigh: Make no phone calls, make no purchases. High-tail it to the beltline. Exit on Lake Boone, and drive through the shopping center there, then park briefly at the apartment complex across the street, where a friend of ours lives. Next, drive to our neighborhood, through some backroads that happens to go past another friend’s house. When passing, knock on his door and ask to hide something. If he isn’t there, i’d like to just hide the money in his backyard shed.  Since there is street parking, it would look like we had just driven through. Next, cross over into our neighborhood and drive to our house and pull into our driveway, but leave immediately. Then drive to the frisbee golf course nearby. Next, drive a short distance to another friend’s house. Then drive as far as we could before the time expired.

I think an hour would be enough time to do all this. If the rules are we needed to make contact with a person before hiding it with them, i would call all three friends and ask them to say they’d seen us, and the first two would say we still had the briefcase when we left. Our story would be hiding it somewhere near the frisbee golf course.

It’s fun to plan, and i wonder if my decoys would be any good. Driving through a lot of neighborhoods has to be suspicious. Would they knock on doors? Would anyone see us?

Where would you stash your cash?

I think the interrogation would be trickier than i imagine, but i’d love to give it a try. How do i sign up for this show?

GOT Episodes 1 & 2

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:07 pm

I love love love HBO’s new show Game of Thrones.  I just want to smooch it.

First off, this is HBO.  There is lots of adult content, profanity, nudity, sex, violence.  If this is not your cup of tea, no need for you to watch the show and you probably won’t be too interested in hearing me talk about it.

I’ve watched the first episode maybe three or four times and the second episode twice.  It’s good.  Very true to the story told in the books, and i love seeing the characters come to life!  There are other places where the basic plot is recounted scene by scene (great summaries if you haven’t been watching), so i’ll skip that part and go straight to my thoughts on it.

The Wall is immense.  Breathtaking.  The first scene is appropriately scary and other-worldly.  We are introduced to the Others White Walkers.  (LOST stole the term Others, i guess. Too bad because now the characters can’t say “The Others take you!” when cursing someone else.) The Walkers don’t appear quite as i imagined them, but they were scary enough.  After the first scenes, there aren’t any further fantastical elements in the series, at least not so far.  The White Walkers are referenced as having been “gone for thousands of years” but no one seems to take this threat seriously, as there are other more pressing concerns for the realm.

The casting is superb.  King Robert and Illyrio are not nearly as fat as they are supposed to be, but everyone else is pretty much spot on.  They did a great job with family resemblances, which are so important to the storyline.  Joffrey is the slimy little turd that you love to hate.  Cersei is perfect in her absolute evilness and ambition for power. And Viserys totally gives me the creeps.  But Peter Dinklage as Tyrion is the one who truly steals the show.  He’s perfect, portraying the many sides of Tyrion the dwarf already in just two episodes and limited screen time – the drunk lecher, the loving uncle, the scheming politician

The wolf pups are not as present as they are in the books.  They are there, and boy are they cute, but their scenes are a little awkward sometimes.  It’s hard to work with animals, though.

In the first episode, Dany is sold into marriage to the savage Drogo, and at first i was dismayed that their initial encounters were so, well, barbaric.  But it becomes clear in the second episode that they are in fact going to grow that relationship into something real, and i like how the directors have handled that story arc.

My least favorite line is when King Robert says “There’s a war coming, Ned.  I don’t know when, and i don’t know who we’ll be fighting, but it’s coming.”  How ridiculous.  How can you know a war is coming if you have no inkling of who your enemies will be?  Surely you have to have some idea about enemies of the state to make a proclamation like that.

Overall, it’s fabulous.  Can’t wait to see the next episode, where the intrigues get thick down in King’s Landing.

Winter Is Coming

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 8:19 am

I haven’t mentioned this really, mainly because it has snuck up on me.  This Sunday night (tomorrow!) is the season premier of HBO’s newest series Game of Thrones.

I am uber-excited.

Why?  Well, this series is based on my favoritest series of books by my favoritest author.  Book 1 in A Song of Ice and Fire is called A Game of Thrones.  And it’s about to be brought to life!

I have seen previews and snippets of the first episode.  I have watched many cast interviews.  The cast is amazing, by the way.  Sean Bean is featured as the main protagonist, and Peter Dinklage is one of the antagonists.  Many great actors fill out the supporting roles, and almost all the press coverage from the lucky few to have seen early screenings has been positive.

The story is set in the medieval-type country of Westeros.  Seven powerful families exist in the realm.  Two of them are conjoined in marriage and hold the Iron Throne as the story begins, but power is a precarious thing.  A series of events quickly causes all kinds of shit to hit the fans.  There are lots of plots and intrigues, as well as action, war and swords.  There is sex and violence, complicated relationships.  Oh, and dragons.  (Not really.)  (Well, at least not at first…)

HBO is committed to the series, and has a unique marketing plan, including complimentary rides in Iron Throne pedicabs in NYC (pictured above).  Oh how i wish i could ride in one!

Nathan & Heather are coming to visit this weekend, and they may be forced to watch the premier with me.  I’ll probably watch it several times, and maybe even blog about each episode if i am so inclined.  And unless you are watching also, or have read the books, you can just skip those posts.  But Robert and should be able to discuss them at length.

So excited!!

HBO is trying to appeal to a large audience, not just fans of the books like me.  If you have HBO, give it a shot.  It will be good, i guarantee it.

Intervention

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 12:38 pm

Lately, Lance and i have found ourselves hooked on, of all things, Intervention.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s a show that is shot documentary-style as a glance into the life of an addict.  The addictions range from drugs, gambling and shopping to food-related disorders.  The person being focused on doesn’t know that their family has contacted the show with the purpose of doing an intervention; the person just think they’re helping with a documentary.  You follow the person through a few days of their life, talk with the family members, and at the end there is an intervention.  The person can say yes or no.  So far everyone has said yes.

I first heard of this show about 2 years ago through my book club.  I tried watching it on regular TV, but didn’t really get into it.  I think now that it was because i tried watching it live and there were too many commercials to be able to get “into” it.  Now, we are streaming it from Netflix, and there are NO commercials.  It’s great, no suspense.

It’s a little bit fascinating and a little bit scary.  If i ever thought i had problems?  Nope, my life is easy.  I can’t imagine being a family member of someone who was addicted to heroin – the families go through so much pain.

One thing about the drug addicts – if the show says they are addicted to “heroin”, inevitably they are actually using everything else too, including meth and crack.  There are a lot of meth addicts shown.  I suppose there is a hierarchy of hard drugs, and the show advertises the worst one being used, but it seems that if you are addicted to meth you probably also do crack and pills.

A couple of things i have learned (i mean, i never had a reason to know any of this before).

  • One time doing heroin is enough to get you addicted.  That’s so scary.
  • There are lots of ways to ingest the same drug.
  • People who have bulimia are often extremely good at hiding it.

I’m always very proud of the families for coming together to support the person.  And i’m always happy for the person when they complete their treatment and continue to do well.  Only 44% of people who went to rehab in 2005 actually completed treatment.  Certainly some number of those relapse, which makes the success rate seem small, but some lives saved must be better than no lives saved.

The End of Lost

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 8:52 am

*** WARNING!  Spoilers abound. ***

(Spoiler tag added above because it looks like i ruined Lost for one of my readers.  Sorry, Nora!)

I didn’t like it.

I was already mad that Jin and Sun died in the 3rd to last episode, for no apparent reason.  And i mean, i was pissed!  I was telling people who don’t even watch Lost how disappointed i was.

The penultimate episode was titled “What They Died For”, and didn’t really answer any questions about why they had died.  It still seemed purposeless to me.  The Big Meaning Of It All didn’t justify their deaths in my mind.  Of all the people on the island, Jin and Sun were the only ones i really cared got off the island, and back to their daughter.  They were the only ones with a real-world reason to survive off-island.

All this season, i’ve been wondering how these flash-sideways things would tie into the main story.  Was this What Would Have Happened if Jacob hadn’t chosen them all?  Was this the real reality, and the island was just some made-up thing like a dream?

No, it turns out that the flash-sideways things were the made-up dream.  The explanation was that it was a place that they had all created together as a way to find each other and remember the island, since that was the most important part of everyone’s lives.

I didn’t like it.  It was so… emotionally manipulative.  Everyone was figuring out that they were dead.  You didn’t know at first exactly what they were figuring out, but they cried and seemed happy and huggy, so you assumed it must be something wonderful.  I cried, like everyone else.  But to me, that part overshadowed what was really happening on the island.  When they were trying to get the plane off the island, i didn’t even think at the time that it was the “real” story.

Maybe that was the point.  The reason we loved the show so much was yes of course the mysteriousness of the island, but it was more about the characters and the relationships between them.  So maybe it was important to show how they all cared for each other and reconnected after they were all dead.

But it was so HOKEY.  Let’s bring back Shannon for 30 seconds!  And she and Sayid can makeout in the parking lot!  Wait, what?  I mean, it was nice to see her again, but i thought Nadia was Sayid’s true love.  Sayid and Shannon only connected for like two episodes before she was killed off.

It would have been nice to see what happened to the ones that actually got off the island the second time, like we did with the Oceanic Six.  Not that that was any picnic for any of them – it seemed to me during the flash forwards that they were all completely miserable off-island.  But it would have been nice to see Claire reunited with Aaron.

By the way, when did The Numbers stop having significance?

And who the hell knows or remembers their flight number, ever?

I haven’t been completely happy with the show since Charlie died.  Claire disappeared sometime before that, and that was annoying, and when she came back finally she was brainwashed and in league with the super baddie.  And then Sayid turned to the dark side and that made me mad too.  And then Jin and Sun died.  Grr.

I’m not sure what i wanted.  A happy ending, maybe?  Some people have said that this WAS a happy ending.  But i don’t see it that way.  To me it was just a nebulous ending.  Yes, the bad guy was defeated and yes there was a teary-eyed reunion.  But it wasn’t real, and i think that’s what is bothering me.  Most of what happened in the show at least tried to be somewhat reality based, if only loosely.

Lost will now become lost in my memory.

Movies

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 7:42 am

Some movies and TV shows we’ve seen this year, and my brief thoughts about them.

Food, Inc. Fascinating and disturbing.  Everyone should watch this.  The notion that a fast food hamburger is cheaper to buy than fresh produce is pretty bizarre when you think about it, but we the taxpayers are subsidizing this huge food industry which is what allows there to be cheap food.  Cheap food is good, but there needs to be more attention paid to food safety.

Away We Go A young couple travels to various cities visiting old family and friends, attempting to make a decision about where to move and have their first child.  Maya Rudolph and John Krisinski are wonderful in this, and the characters they meet are unforgettable.  It is a search for “home”.

Sunshine Cleaning A quirky, dark film.  A former maid service employee forms her own company, cleaning up the scenes of homicides and suicides.  The story explores darker human emotions such as insecurity and grief and how you can overcome them.

He’s Just Not That Into You A story about the search for love and how you sometimes find it.  Cute, but not particularly memorable.

30 Rock Enjoyable, though not deep.

Saved! An amusing portrayal of life at a Christian high school.  A teen decides to save her gay boyfriend by having sex with him, and becomes disillusioned when she finds herself pregnant and begins questioning the Christian ideals.

Guns, Germs and Steel A discovery channel mini series that asks why do we have wealth and plenty and “cargo” here while other societies are stuck in the third world?

Star Trek I grew up as something of a Trekkie, and i loved this story of the young Kirk and Spock, and am looking forward to how this series will continue.

AdventureLand Working at an amusement park is not all fun and games.  But wherever there are teenagers, petty rivalries and true love are bound to spark.

Observe and Report Seth Rogen plays a mall cop with some bi-polar tendencies.  The film is pretty dark and bizarre and revolves around the cop’s attempts to stop a flasher.  Can’t say i really liked this movie.

Earth Released on Earth Day, this film showed how different species migrate and care for their young.  We had seen a lot of the footage before, from other Discovery Channel TV documentaries.  It’s important for us to know how we are affecting the animal world.

Breaking Bad A Showtime TV series about a high school chemistry teacher in dire straights (a teenage son with a disability, a wife newly pregnant, diagnosed with severe lung cancer, needing treatment that insurance will not cover) who needs a lot of cash and turns to producing crystal meth.  Very engaging.

Yes Man An entertaining comedy about exploring your horizons.  The scene where he saves the guy from jumping off a building seriously made my cry.

Thin A documentary following girls in a rehab center for anorexia and bulemia.  Tragic.  Many of the girls have a background involving a severe incident such as rape or sexual abuse.  You just wish you could make them believe they are beautiful.  Self-hatred is so powerful.

Fargo An older movie i had never seen.  Excellent.

Pan’s Labrinth Billed as a fantasy for adults, i found it weird and dark and freaky.

Milk The story of Harvey Milk, and gay rights.  Harvey became California’s first openly gay elected official before being assassinated.

Jane Austen Book Club I think i would have connected more with this movie if i had read all of Jane’s Austen’s books.  It was still intresting to watch and compare to my own book club.

Kalifornia An interesting thriller.  Brad Pitt plays an excellent bad guy.

Weeds

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 2:20 pm

My new favorite TV show is Showtime’s Weeds.  I stumbled upon it due to one of Netflix’s recommendations for me based on my other interests.  Boy, did they hit a nail on the head!  I love it!  Over the weekend we had both discs of Season 1, and watched all 10 episodes.  We were hooked!  I immediately added Season 2 to the top of the Netflix queue.

The story is centers around suburban mom who sells pot in order to stay afloat.  She is recently widowed with 2 sons (10 & 16).  The suburban community of Agrostic is full of lots of stereotypical suburban issues, such as affairs & PTA politics, but already in Season 1 they have also tackled eating disorders, race issues, how children react to a parent’s death, kids having sex, hearing-impaired students… Lots of good stuff here, all presented with at least a little bit of humor.  But it’s honest, and i like that.

At the start, the life of a drug-dealing mom seems pretty much the same as that of any other mom.  But as the show progresses, we start seeing more of the underside of the drug world, and it becomes apparent that Nancy may be in over her head.

I love all three of the main adult characters – Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins and Kevin Nealon.  The kids are doing a pretty good job, too.

I’m eagerly awaiting the next couple of DVDs in the mail, and i imagine most of this Saturday afternoon will be spent watching Season 2.  I highly recommend this to anyone who hasn’t seen it.

P2P and Dexter, Season 2

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:06 pm

We loved season 1 of Dexter so much that we were dying to see Season 2. But, it wasn’t yet available on DVD.

So, i turned to a technology that i have long heard about, but never tried: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking. And it was pretty easy, once i found a client that automatically handled the port forwarding stuff for me.

P2P is just one in a long list of things that i’ve known the basics of for years, but never had to know details, because i had a husband who was extremely techy and always knew what the latest and greatest thing was. But, on my own, i’ve had to learn how to do it all myself: how to configure my router for my own wireless network, the details of video cards, apple software and upgrades, ipod library management, wiring stereo equipment, how to change air filters, GPS, creating my own website and adding wordpress and plugins and writing php code, web application servers, back-up servers… It’s all stuff i never had to know anything about. I never *wanted* to know anything about it either, which is why i’m proud of myself for eventually figuring it all out. I know there is a slew of new technological things to figure out now, but P2P was i believe the last one that i associate with “things my ex did for me”.

Season 2 of Dexter was very suspenseful. I don’t remember the first season being quite so nail-biting. This season, it always seemed that Dexter was about to get caught! It was excellent, and Michael C. Hall was awesome. The woman who plays his sister really gets on my nerves – i don’t think she’s a great actress. And the old guy that she fell for during the 2nd half of the season – his acting was even worse! But the rest of the show was definitely worth it.

I was surprised to see that there are plans for Season 3. Season 2 wrapped up rather nicely since they offed both the psycho girlfriend and the suspicious co-worker. It will be interesting to see what they have in store, and if they can really keep up the same intensity.

Dexter, Season 1

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 4:40 pm

i first heard of dexter from my book club buddies.  they had also recommended ‘intervention’, which i didn’t particularly care for, so i didn’t rush to watch it.  it finally made it to the top of my netflix queue, though, and lance & i were immediately hooked.

dexter morgan is an emotionally unattached person who is faking his way through life.  his foster-father recognized that he was different.  see, dexter has a desire to kill things.  dad channeled it and taught him how to act like a mostly normal person.  dad also taught him a code – do not kill innocent people.  guilty people?  no problem, the world is better off without them.

the show is very intriguing.  each show has its own plot, and portrays the relationships and politics taking place within the miami police department.  dexter and his sister both work there; she as a detective, and he as a forensics analyst.  overlaying the mini plots is the master thread weaving through the whole season – someone has found out about dexter’s secret hobby, and is playing games with him.  deadly games.

last night, it was 12:30 when we finished watching the penultimate episode of season 1.  it was late, but it was such a cliffhanger that it was impossible not to watch the last episode, too!

it’s very well done.  the show is very darkly humorous.  i very much like dexter, despite the fact that he’s a killer.  i’m quite fond of the theme music, too, i find myself humming it often.  the sister is pretty annoying, though.
