Roger & Me

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:13 pm

Back in the late 80s, when Michael Moore was in better shape, he made a “documentary” film called Roger & Me. I disagree with the notion that Moore’s films are actually documentaries, but in general i like his style, sometimes agree with his opinions, and always enjoy the discussion his films generate.

The premise is that Moore is trying to obtain an interview with Roger Smith, the big dog at General Motors, to get him to come to Flint, Michigan to see the effect had on the town when GM closed down all its plants. He never gets his interview, but we do see the disastrous effects on the town.

The plight of the people portrayed is very unfortunate. The town was in bad shape. Even today, the towns in that area suffer. A friend of mine moved to a nearby city and bought a house, with high hopes of making her home there long-term. Well, she hated the job and now she can’t sell her house. No one wants to move to that area anymore. It used to be a thriving area, built around the many jobs available at the many automotive plants in the area.

Moore seems to want to place the blame of the economic downturn at Roger Smith’s feet and hold him responsible. The inference is that GM shouldn’t have closed the plants, and that GM has a responsibility to the town and to the employees.

I disagree entirely. GM is a business, and the decision-makers have to make decisions that benefit the company and the bottom line. Let’s say i run my own small business and you work for me. Now let’s say i find someone else who is willing to do the same exact job for half your salary. Maybe she is younger, or has less experience, but if i think she can do the job as well as you, i’m costing myself money by keeping you employed. I don’t think anyone will disagree with my example. For some reason, big corporations don’t get the benefit of the same logic. They are a monstrous entity to be railed against and blamed. But the bottom line is, they are a business, and they will make business decisions, and i don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

I think it’s very sad and unfortunate what happened to that town, and i feel for the people who had to face tough circumstances because of it. I think it sucks that my friend lives and works in one state while hoping desparately that her house near Flint will sell sometime soon. But i don’t think Roger Smith or GM need to be held accountable for this.

So, i’m not sure how to rate this movie. It has provoked a strong reaction in me, and in general i think that’s a good thing. However, i think the point of the movie is way off base. Another point against the movie is the way the timeline of events is presented. No dates are given in the film, but the progression of the movie indicates that the plant closings caused other events in the town, when in fact the plant closings hadn’t even happened yet. I don’t want to get too into the details, but when i read about that, it bothered me.

Thus ends my rambling thoughts on Roger & Me.

Stand & Deliver

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:14 pm

tand and Deliver is a movie about a group of high school students in an underprivileged Los Angeles neighborhood. An inspirational teacher starts them out with basic math, and works long hours with them and gets them through calculus. 18 of them take the AP Calculus exam, and 18 of them pass.

Great story, and a true one. Today was the first official meeting with my three math mentees. I brought them to my house, and after Nugent barked at them a lot, we watched the movie. I remember watching this movie in 9th grade myself. I’m not sure if it had the same impression on them as it did on me, but they did pay attention and didn’t seem bored. We talked some about the movie, but not a lot. I’m still trying to get them to open up to me.

Overall, though, it went quite well. The one girl, M, who seemed pretty introverted the first night i met them, held her own with the other two, who seem to be good friends already and talk talk talk. M seems the most determined to get something out of this program, though.

We ate pizza and i showed them some math card tricks i know, which they seemed eager to learn so they could show off at school. Then one of them said “you know what i’ve always wanted to learn? how to play poker…” So… we went over the basics and the order of hands. I hope i don’t get into trouble with the parents for that. There’s a lot of math in poker, though, no arguing that!

Nugent barked some more, and then we left for Ben & Jerry’s, the prearranged meeting spot. Got a sweet snack, and sent them on their way.

I’m definitely out of touch with what it’s like to be a 13 year old girl. I wish i could really get across the idea that the fact that the social studies teacher isn’t fair isn’t something that will matter when they’re out in the Real World. But, the truth is, whatever is going on in our lives is what matters to us right now. The Real World for an 8th grader is the unfair social studies teacher. And that’s cool. And it’s not right for me to think that doesn’t matter. I need to just let them talk and be themselves. At least some of the value of this program is just hanging out with an adult who isn’t related to them, and i need to remember that i don’t need to always be trying to teach them something, or make it about math.

I’m looking forward to our next event, about 4 weeks away. They get to miss a day of school, and i get to miss a day of work!

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:23 pm

his was a Netflix recommendation. My friend Netflix figured i would like this movie because of the other types of documentaries i have rated highly.

They were right.

It was pretty neat. The story focuses on a bum (?) who befriends one of the flocks of parrots. (I call him a bum simply because he didn’t really have a home or a job and never paid for anything, but he was a nice, friendly, intellectual type guy.) He feeds them sunflower seeds, and they trust him and just swarm around him. He takes care of the injured ones and nurses them back to health.

We meet several of the parrots with distinctive personalities. It’s so neat to see the one parrot who shakes the branch he is standing on when he is excited. And the other parrot who dances when the guitar is played. And the one who is a peace-maker instead of a trouble-maker. Cool stuff.

Very interesting; i’d definitely recommend it.

Christmas Shoes

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:22 pm

I had several movies on my Christmas list that my mom could have chosen from once she chose to give me a movie. But, she likes to do things her way and took none of those suggestions, instead giving me Christmas Shoes. One look at the cover and i knew this was a movie that would make me cry.

I happen to enjoy a good cry now and then. It’s cleansing, therapeutic. This movie went above and beyond. I think i sobbed through half the movie!

It was very good. It focuses on two couples around Christmastime. One is facing marital troubles. In the other, the wife is waiting for a heart transplant. She dies, of course, and there are a lot of opportunities for heart-wrenching moments to catch on film.

The screenplay for this movie is actually based on a song by NewSong. I’ve reprinted it here. The song alone makes me cry, so it’s no surprise that the movie version made me sob buckets.

Thanks, Mom! This was a great movie gift.

Christmas Shoes, by NewSong

It was almost Christmas time,
There I stood in another line
Tryin’ to buy that last gift or two,
Not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was
A little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing ’round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old,
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn’t believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes
For my Mama, please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir,
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, “Son, there’s not enough here”
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do
Somehow I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down,
I just had to help him out
I’ll never forget the look on his face when
He said Mama’s gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir,
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Mama meets Jesus tonight

I knew I’d caught a glimpse of heaven’s love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Enchanted

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:33 pm

Enchanted was just plain fun entertainment. I went into it knowing exactly what it was – a fairy tale with a “happily ever after” ending, and that’s exactly what i got. Amy Adams was perfectly innocent and naive as Giselle, and Patrick Dempsey, aka McDreamy, was great as the “real” Prince Charming. Susan Surandon was a great evil stepmother, although unfortunately there wasn’t ENOUGH of her – her role in the movie was very small, and the really evil parts were when she turned into an ugly old hag (who i’m sure was NOT played by Surandon).

I went to see this on Christmas Eve eve with my mom and 11-year old cousin. We had a grand time being girls. I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to have a fantastical/magical afternoon with a good girlfriend.

Dan in Real Life

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:39 pm

Dan in Real Life was delightfully funny. A great little romantic comedy. Steve Carrell is definitely one of the best comedic actors of the day. Here he is less outrageous and ridiculous, and the situations encountered are much more believable than, say, the 40-year old Virgin. (which was also funny and worth seeing)

*spoiler alert*

In this movie, he plays a widower Dad to 3 girls. They take off for a holiday vacation in Rhode Island with the whole extended family. I personally identified with the chaos of the family because my own family frequently has these types of get-togethers. The first day there, Dan meets an amazing woman in a bookshop and they have an immediate connection. She gets a phone call from her boyfriend, though, and has to dash away. He heads back to the house, tells the brothers that he has met someone, and everyone is excited for him. Then he is faced with one brother’s new girlfriend. You guessed it! The boyfriend who’d called her was in fact his brother.

The rest of the movie is a cleverly done story of how they interact and get to know each other better. Very cute, very funny. The interaction with his daughters is also well done. I’d definitely recommend seeing this movie.

Short Bus

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:22 am

Short Bus was one of the previewed movies shown for another movie we watched sometime or other. One of the taglines was “it’s not so much about sex as about sexuality.” I guess, but there was a whole lotta sex in this movie!

It was very good. There were two main couples that the story focused around, one gay couple and one straight couple. The female in the straight couple has never had an orgasm, and she spends most of the film trying to find one. She is, interestingly, a couples counsellor and sex therapist, and one of her couples is the gay couple. One of them is severely depressed, and they are struggling with this and other issues.

The tertiary characters are unforgettable as well. I highly recommend it.

The Golden Compass

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:23 am

The Golden Compass is the the first segment in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.  I first read the books a few years ago at the urging of my brother Adam.  We are always exchanging book recommendations as we seem to enjoy the same types of things.  And i did enjoy them, very much.  So i was excited to see the first of the books transferred to the big screen.

Overall, the movie was done very well.  It is a bit rushed and choppy, at one place in particular:  meeting the gyptians and getting their aid all happens much too fast to digest.  I think we met them for the first time and were firmly allied with them and travelling North together in the space of 5 minutes.  The rest of the film was pretty fast-paced, but comfortably so.

They changed the explanation of Dust, which seemed to be more confusing.  Even having read the books (although it has admittedly been awhile), i was confused.  It is diluted so that it’s not totally obvious that Dust represents Original Sin, although you’ll see it if you’re looking for it.  They couldn’t make it obvious, i guess – that would be too controversial for the mainstream.

Overall, though, it was quite entertaining.  The ending definitely leaves you wanting more.  I hope it will be well-received so the rest of the trilogy will be released in movie form.  I don’t know how they can avoid the anti-religious theme in the 2nd two movies as easily as they did in the first, but i’d like to see how they turn out.  I definitely recommend this movie.

F*ck

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:26 am

Fuck is a very interesting documentary, attempting to describe the word’s origins and follow the evolution of how the word is used.  It’s a very old word, first appearing in print in the 15th century, but suspected of being much older.

The most amusing myth about the word, which i have never heard but is apparently quite common, is that the origin is an acronym for Fornication Under Consent of the King.  How amusing.  But it is shown to be clearly just a myth.

Lots of interesting things about the evolution of the common usage of the word, as well as how it is used in music, tv, movies and politics.  Highly recommended.

Muppet Movie

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:31 am

Ever since i left the protected place in my parents’ home, i have been greeted with a certain bit of incredulity whenever the subject of Muppets comes up. “You don’t like the Muppets?!?” people exclaim in dismay. It’s not that i don’t like them, i just never got much exposure to them. So i don’t really “get” it – i don’t have the happy associations with childhood that other people do.

We Netflixed (isn’t it interesting how that is becoming a word, the same way “google” has become a word) a DVD of the Muppet TV show this summer, and i REALLY didn’t get it then. It was mildly entertaining, but not something where i would want to watch the entire series.

The Muppet Movie is showing at the Colony Theater for the holidays, so, on Thanksgiving Eve, we went to see it. I actually liked it! What a good story. And i really liked some of the songs, especially the “Rainbow Connection”. So, i think i’m a muppet convert now. I will never have the childhood associations, but i can appreciate them a lot better now.

Good movie.
