Eat. Pray. Love. by Elizabeth Gilbert

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 4:13 pm

eat pray love was our book club choice this month, and we met last night to discuss it. i really liked this book. 4.1 out of 5. (i need more than one significant digit)

at the beginning, the author, liz, decides to travel the world for a year. she is at the end of an unamicable divorce. she’s had a roller coaster relationship with another man. she feels like she’s done what she’s supposed to do in her life, but isn’t fulfilled. and so she travels, looking for fulfillment in three ways: pleasure, prayer and balance.

for pleasure, she spends four months in italy. she wants to learn italian and eat marvelous food. and she does.

for prayer, she spends four months in an ashram in india, under the tutelage of a guru. here, she learns to meditate and accept the parts of herself that she has been struggling with.

for balance, she spends her last four months in bali. she studies with a 9th generation medicine man, an also-divorced (rare in bali) medicine woman, and also finds love again.

the book is broken into 108 fairly short chapters, which made for easy reading. each chapter was a story in itself, and i loved these little stories. they made me want to retrace her steps and go on a similar journey.

i find it difficult to describe why i liked the book so much. i identified with liz on a number of different levels. the self-awareness she gained from meditation appealed to me. maybe i’ll try it sometime.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 4:43 pm

Water for Elephants was an extremely entertaining read.  It flips back and forth between 90 (or 93) year old Jacob Jankowski during his days in an assisted living facility, and his 23 year old self in the 1930s.  Tragedy strikes young Jacob when his parents both die just before he takes his vet exams.  He does the only sane thing — he accidentally runs away with the circus.  He becomes the show’s veterinarian.  There he meets and falls for Marlena, a performer who is already married… to Jacob’s boss.  We also meet Rosie, a pachyderm with quite a personality.

There are several different themes in the book which show up in many different ways.  For example, the theme of being trapped: Jacob is trapped in the nursing home, Marlena is trapped in her marriage, Rosie is trapped performing for a crazy & violent man.

The descriptions of the circus seems true-to-life.  I have seen one other depiction of circus life in the 1930s – on the HBO series Carnivale.  One thing that struck me in both of these depictions is just how dirty everything and everyone is.

The story is written very well – i couldn’t put it down.  The story of young Jacob was certainly the most interesting, but old Jacob is quite a feisty fellow and i was curious what would happen to him, too.  The ending surprised and amused me.

I would definitely recommend it.  It would be an excellent book club book.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:09 pm

I’m finished.  Over a week in advance of the book club meeting too.  It’s funny – we all seemed to dread reading it, but nonetheless agreed.  And i must say, i am glad.

I found my copy at Mike’s Used Books for $1.  Since that was all i had on me at the time, i was quite happy.  That was two weeks ago, and i was worried i was running out of time.  I sure didn’t think i’d be unable to put it down.

I just enjoyed a 3-day weekend, and when it started on Thursday, i was approximately 1/3 of the way through the book.  And now i’m through, and wishing i could read more about these characters.

The book is divided roughly into thirds.  The first section is where we get to know our character and who she is; how she was raised, and the influences in her young life.  The second section is her time as a governess at the home of Mr. Rochester.  The third section is after she flees that house and makes her own way in the world, eventually finding long-lost cousins.

The middle section was by far my favorite section.  There were extreme highs and lows there.  I was so happy the morning Jane was going to marry her Mr. Rochester.  I wondered at the number of remaining pages and what left there could possibly be left to write about?  And then, agony.  The conversations between them immediately following the abandoned ceremony were some of the most touching sentiments ever expressed.  I certainly wouldn’t have been able to resist him.

Looking forward to the discussions.  :-)

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:21 am

I have just finished The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. This is the second book chosen by my book group. I have finished it early – our next meeting is not until the end of January.

I am not reviewing it just yet because i think some of my book club chics might be checking out my blog, and i don’t want to give anything away.

But i do want to say, I LOVED IT. By far one of the better books i have read this year. I was drawn in, and even though it is quite a bit bigger than the last book we read, it took me significantly less time to complete. It’s a page-turner. Ladies, you will love it. And if anyone else is looking for a book to read just for fun, definitely pick this one up.

The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:35 am

The Almost Moon was the first book chosen by a newly formed book club, made up mostly of ladies i know from work, with a few additional friends mixed in.  I had no idea what this book would be about.  I loved The Lovely Bones, also by Alice Sebold, so i was looking forward to this book.  That is, until i started reading it.

The Almost Moon is an exploration of insanity.  The first line of the book, “When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily,” draws you in, and you think the main character, 50-year old Helen, is the one who is insane.  Quickly, you learn it is her mother who has been mentally ill for her daughter’s entire existence.  Through many flashbacks and memories, you learn what it was like to live with a parent who is crazy, and what kinds of effects it had on this character.

But wait!  Then you discover that, in fact, her father was also crazy!  and that has profoundly affected her as well.

How to describe it?  I did not particularly like it, although it was definitely interesting.  It left me depressed at times, and i was increasingly annoyed at the main character’s bizarre behavior.  I can tell it was very good writing because of how i reacted, but i did not like it.  I would also say i did not get emotionally involved in the book as i could not identify with any of the characters.  And thus when the book ended with a sort of cliffhanger, i was only briefly annoyed that the end wasn’t tied up neatly, and then i promptly moved on with my life.

All in all, it was pretty dark, and not a very enjoyable read.  I can’t say that i recommend it.  But it was interesting, and i’m not sorry to have experienced it.
