One week ago today, Lance and i expanded our family, bringing home one beautiful baby girl, 29 pounds. We named her Maddux. In this house, we name our pets after sports figures, and this little girl is named after Greg Maddux, one-time pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.

We adopted her from the Wake County SPCA. What a great experience, by the way. The volunteers there are amazing. We’ve been talking about getting a second dog for at least two years. Nugent is about 7 years old now, but still quite spry and could use a playmate. He does like his new little sister, and they wrestle every day. Though she certainly has more energy than he does.

Maddux is a Rottweiler/Hound mix, and slated to be maybe 60 pounds, which is half again as large as Nugent. He’s definitely the alpha dog right now, but i’m not sure how long that will last.
Nugent is one to play with toys, but Maddux is play, play, play and chew, chew, chew. We have a variety of doggie toys strewn all about the house, but of course, the best toys are the simplest, such as this empty plastic bottle.

She hasn’t quite got the hang of peeing outside, though we’ve made some progress this week. Puppy classes start soon. She sure is fun, though. We enjoy playing with her. This is me on the floor, with Maddux attacking and licking my face.

She has her super sweet side, too, and she loves her daddy.

It’s been fun, and we are happy with the new addition to our family. Now if only we can get this peeing thing under control…

OMG she is so cute. I didn’t realize that she was named after _Greg Maddux_, who also was a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. I was (still am) a Chicago Cubs fan…I just abhor professional sports now (except for tennis; yes, I am a hypocrite). It was the baseball strike and Ryan Sandberg that ruined it for me… But I had a big crush on Greg and my boss at the time – I worked for K-Mart – knew him. She thought it was crazy that I had such a crush on him.
Anyway, Maddux is adorable. I am sure that Nugent will help her learn the peeing thing but I totally understand. When we got our twins, we had peeing issues too. Every once in awhile, even now, one of them has an accident. But it seemed like they were NEVER going to learn to be housebroken. But they’re small dogs and I think they’re harder to break than a dog like Maddux. She is SO FRICKING CUTE!!! CONGRATS!!!

Oh my gosh! She is an absolute DOLL!!! That face is irresistible! She looks like she has the face of a hound, no doubt, and her ears are more rotty than hound. I love the look of her coat. Can’t wait to meet her one day! Enjoy being puppy parents again.
p.s. It’s hard to imagine Nuggent as dominant toward anything. maybe Maddux will bring out new sides to him! Glad he likes being a big bro.
