Take the Money and Run

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 7:21 pm

My current infatuation with TV shows is ABC’s new show Take the Money and Run. Thank you to Cindy for telling me about this show!

The premise is this: a team of two is given a briefcase (handcuffed to an arm, no less) full of $100,000 and give one hour to hide it. A second team of two, usually active or retired police veterans, then take the “robbers” into custody for 48 hours. If the briefcase is still in its hiding place 48 hours later, the Robbers win, and get to keep the money. If not, the Cops get to keep it.

The robber are put in jail for the two days, and undergo interrogations by another team of two, the Investigators. The Investigators are the same every episode. The Cops are out in the field, searching, and the Investigators question the Robbers and relay any pertinent info to the Cops.

I love it! The hide part is always fun. So far the contestants seem to always know a little about whatever city they’re in. In the four shows i have seen, one pair of contestants buried the briefcase in a park, one pair stashed it in some bushes, and two pairs hid the money with a friend. I have my plan already figured out – see below.

The interrogation portion seems to be the hardest; all contestants agree. It doesn’t really look that bad, honestly, but the psychology of it is what really fascinates me. In two episodes, one of the Robbers cracked under the pressure of interrogation. The Robbers are separated, of course, and put in small cells that look just like what you would expect a cell to be. In one episode, we saw the Investigators do an interrogation session inside the Robber’s cell with him, invading his personal space. When they left, they took his toothbrush, toothpaste and book he had been reading to pass the time. That Robber later cracked. I really dislike not being able to brush my teeth, but I think i could endure anything for two days.

The rules are this: the Investigators have access to your GPS route, your phone calls and all receipts. There also seem to be some undisclosed rules that we’re not explicitly told about. In one episode, we heard an Investigator remind a Robber, “You know that you do not have the right to remain silent, right?” So it seems you can’t go on the show and then just give the Investigators the silent treatment. I guess that wouldn’t make for good TV. It’s interesting, then, because the Robbers have to either tell the truth or make up a lie, and then the Investigators try to decipher the differences.

I also wonder if there are other undisclosed rules. Could i trespass on someone’s property? Do i need to get permission from a friend to go in their house or yard? Could i knock on a stranger’s door? Could i leave it in the trunk of a friend’s car? No one has done any of those things, so i don’t know.

Meanwhile the Cops are out there retracing your route and in some cases, literally beating the bushes.

My plan – assuming it was in Raleigh: Make no phone calls, make no purchases. High-tail it to the beltline. Exit on Lake Boone, and drive through the shopping center there, then park briefly at the apartment complex across the street, where a friend of ours lives. Next, drive to our neighborhood, through some backroads that happens to go past another friend’s house. When passing, knock on his door and ask to hide something. If he isn’t there, i’d like to just hide the money in his backyard shed.  Since there is street parking, it would look like we had just driven through. Next, cross over into our neighborhood and drive to our house and pull into our driveway, but leave immediately. Then drive to the frisbee golf course nearby. Next, drive a short distance to another friend’s house. Then drive as far as we could before the time expired.

I think an hour would be enough time to do all this. If the rules are we needed to make contact with a person before hiding it with them, i would call all three friends and ask them to say they’d seen us, and the first two would say we still had the briefcase when we left. Our story would be hiding it somewhere near the frisbee golf course.

It’s fun to plan, and i wonder if my decoys would be any good. Driving through a lot of neighborhoods has to be suspicious. Would they knock on doors? Would anyone see us?

Where would you stash your cash?

I think the interrogation would be trickier than i imagine, but i’d love to give it a try. How do i sign up for this show?

Something that makes me happy: Nugent’s crazy dance-bark-bark-dance after you ask him “Wanna go for a walk?”

Something tasty: Ice cream sandwiches.

Something i learned: How to correctly pronounce “timbre,” which i used in a sentence (correctly) but mispronounced.

Something i am reading: Finished Tiger & Fly. Still working on my A Dance with Dragons reread.

Something happening around the house: Lots of online bridge.

Something i am thinking: One more week of work. Then ! ! ! B E A C H ! ! !  After that, one day of work. Then i’m off to Denver for a conference. Which is work but is still off-kilter and hopefully fun.

Something i am looking forward to: ! ! ! B E A C H ! ! !

Something i am hoping: For good sleep – haven’t been sleeping that well.

Something random: I joined a bowling league through work. It starts in a couple of weeks. (Note: I am a terrible bowler.)

Something planned: ! ! ! B E A C H ! ! !

Irene’s A-Coming, Better Get Goin

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 12:03 am

Chuckle, chuckle over this sign that is posted outside a hotel in the Outer Banks, which is being evacuated due to Hurricane Irene.

We are headed to the Outer Banks in one week. The storm will be long gone by then, but i do hope the beach isn’t broken so we tourists can have our fun.

The Help, The Movie

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 8:58 am

My book club read The Help last year. It was one of our favorites. I loved it. After i read it i told Lance i might want to name a daughter Mae Mobley. It is now in theaters.

The basic story is this – set in the early 60′s in Jackson, Mississippi, a rich white girl, nickname Skeeter, fresh out of Ole Miss, decides she wants to write about the help. She sees and recognizes the plight of black maids in the area, and collects their stories to publish. Anonymously. It is very controversial for the time, and Skeeter collects the stories of the maids of her friends, who often do not have very nice things to say.

The movie was very well done, in my opinion. Very close to the book. Things were left out, as they always are when books are made into movies. Aibileen didn’t seem old enough to have been a nanny to 17 children. But it was quite good. Lots, lots, of laughs. The Terrible Awful was pricelessly done. If you have not read the book (or won’t), i highly recommend it.

I didn’t cry at all, which surprised me b/c people i had talked to told me they bawled. Perhaps it was because i knew the story, though, and knew what would happen at the end.

The most interesting thing to me, though, was to try to perceive how this movie might be perceived by black women. I have heard and read a fair amount about how this movie is controversial. There are a fair number of  negative reactions. I wanted to understand it.

Despite reading some of the critical stuff on the internets, i’m still not sure i understand. At first, i wondered if it would be the dialect portrayed. In the book, the perspectives of the black women is written in a ‘voice’ that is… not correct. For instance, Aibileen is always telling Mae Mobley, “You is smart, you is kind, you is important.” I’ve also come to see that some people view it as quite presumptuous or insulting that a white author would write a book in which a white woman saves the day by helping the poor black maids to have a voice. Thirdly, i have read that the backdrop of the actual civil rights movement was pushed too much to the background.

I am only a white woman. But i can’t quite see how this book or movie are offensive. Starting a conversation about race seems like a good thing. Let’s talk about white privilege, or about the things that have changed since the time period of The Help, or about the things that have not changed.

Do white people like this movie more than black people? In the Raleigh area at least, this movie is selling out. Our theater was about 80% white. I have also wondered if this movie is more popular in the south. What do you think?

Sunday Somethings, 21Aug11

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 8:52 pm

Others writing the Sunday Somethings: Kerry

Something that makes me happy: Wind and thundery nights, just before a storm. (Nugent doesn’t like it much, though.)

Something tasty: Sloppy Joes. They were sloppy and they were good.

Something i learned: I learned about the history of the ‘jump ball’, or the possession arrow, as it is now known in basketball. The possession arrow  has been used since 1981. One of the reasons cited is that the old ‘jump ball’ gave an unfair advantage to the taller team. To which i reply, doesn’t the taller team already have an advantage?

Something from the bridge table: The thing that makes bridge so very interesting is the way different and complex end positions can arise, depending on how you play or how the defenders play. Often the play of a single card can change things completely.

Something i am reading: A Dance with Dragons, by George R.R. Martin.

Something happening around the house: Working on the 7th load of laundry. There will be a helluva lot of folding before bedtime.

Something i am thinking: About a documentary we watched a few weeks ago called The Cove. I believe it was Ann who blogged about it and it was why i recognized the film title among the dozens of others we might have watched. It is about a cove off the coast of Japan where a lot of dolphin slaughters take place. Apparently this is also the place where nearly all the performing dolphins in the world are captured. Those performing dolphins are of course not killed, but they provide huge sums of money to support this lethal killing ground for thousands of dolphins each year. Definitely worth watching.

Something i am looking forward to: Cooler temperatures? Kind of? It’s supposed to only get into the 80s for the next few days. I’m ready for fall, ya’ll!

Something i am hoping: That Lance’s sister Emily does decide to come to NC early before beach week and spend some time with us. And her little dog, too.

Something random: Today i noticed the neighbors’ dog frolicking in our yard. They weren’t home, so i went after her. I called and called for her, and finally found her – in her own backyard, where she had meekly returned when she realized she was found out. I closed the gate so she couldn’t escape again.

Something planned: Getting acquainted with the new memory card for my camera. Thanks for the tip, Ann and others! Removing a few steps will make sharing photos much easier.

Something that makes me happy: Spa days.

Something i am struggling with: I feel a sucking vortex slowly pulling us into north Raleigh country club bridge. Help!

Something not so tasty: Lance and i did our juice fast thing for two full days, and then quit. That third morning, neither of us could quite force ourselves out of bed to do the hour-long juice-machine operation required for the day.

Something from the bridge table: I wrote up a couple of hands from this past week. Just stories.

Some things i am doing towards my goals: Marking off the juice fast and managing people at work.

Something i am reading: I’m rereading A Dance With Dragons by George R.R. Martin. Slower this time. I’m in a slight reading funk right now.

Something happening around the house: There are Netflix DVDs that we’ve already watched still waiting to be mailed.

Something i am looking forward to: Our beach trip is only a couple of weeks away!

Something i am hoping: That one day soon they invent affordable cameras that automatically upload photos to a website wirelessly. To me it is a cumbersome task to find the camera, find its USB hookup cord, upload to the computer, then upload to the website (which can be slow) in order to finally share photos for your enjoyment.

Something random: Lance is playing softball again this year. So far, no serious injuries. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. He does like to slide and dive for balls.

Something planned: A movie date, a bridge date.

Large and In Charge

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 7:27 pm

So, my big news for the week is: i got promoted!

It’s been about six months in the making, i guess. The testing group i was in had expanded a fair amount, and the Powers That Be decided to split the group in two. The analytical testers split with the more system-oriented testers, the thinking being that each team could be more focused on their respective tasks; previously, everyone did everything. I could have gone either way, but my responsibilities at the time were really more towards the system side, so that’s where i went. My previous manager went to the analytical side to manage them, while our system team had no manager of our own besides the director-level person, who was also managing two other groups. It wasn’t long before she began leaning on me a little to help with coordination-type tasks, mentoring others, leading meetings and designating priorities.

Over the past months i’ve done a little more (and a little more) regarding coordinating our team and our sister team in China. I said good-bye to one beloved project because i had no time to do it properly. I already see more of that coming, which is hard for me because i think i do a good job with my testing responsibilities and i like them and it’s hard to let go. Fortunately everyone works hard and i love my team, and i think they will be able to cover those things.

I still have a lot to learn and a lot of adjusting to do. The thing isn’t officially official until the first of next month. But i’ve already noticed a few things that have changed.

  • More good-mornings and good-afternoons and friendly stop-by-and-say-hellos and what’s-your-weekend-look-like than i’ve ever had before
  • Participating in smaller Manager Meetings, which include The Big Guy who couldn’t quite recall my name after i had worked in his group for a year, but now seems interested in and even took a note about something i said
  • Being BCC’d on email threads about semi-sensitive issues
  • Getting invited to attend the annual conference hosted by our division, even though it is past the deadline to register
  • Suddenly being included in maybe-a-little-too-honest conversations with other managers about how things really work, and hearing their blunt opinions on things and on people
  • Someone making a condescending and rather matter-of-fact racist statement
  • Being unable to sleep because i can’t stop thinking about work.

And that was all this week.

I’m hopeful that the unable-to-sleep thing will lessen. I’ve generally been good about leaving work at work, and i’d like to get that back. I remember, though, when newly enamored of bridge I used to be unable to sleep because i would analyze hands all night. I’ve learned to compartmentalize and turn that off. Hopefully i can do the same with work stuff after i figure out what the hell i’m doing.

I don’t really know what i’m doing, that’s the honest truth. Maybe that’s not so bad. I’m a quick learner, i’m excited about the new opportunity, and i am motivated to do a good job.

So, anybody have any good management books to recommend?

Coconut Water

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 2:49 pm

We’ve been doing the juicing for one and a half days now. No cheating by either of us. (Though today in particular the snacks in the break room at work have been calling to me.)

Yesterday, Day 1, was a terrible day for me. I had a headache for most of the afternoon and evening, which was probably caffeine withdrawal. All day long, my “flora and fauna” were distressed, and i made many trips to the bathroom, and many uncomfortable chuckles as my gurgle-y stomach made itself known to others.

The diet consists of 4 main ‘meal’ juices during the day, 2-3 containers of coconut water, and as much regular water as you want.

I actually have not been hungry. There is plenty of volume and calories in the juices. It’s a little weird not to eat or chew anything, but overall i’m not wishing for more food. What i’m wishing for is better food. These juices are not that great. They’re not that bad either; even the one that kind of tasted like grass wasn’t that bad. But they’re not that great. Last night, after a day of mediocre juice combined with the flora and fauna issues i was having, i was not looking forward to another day.

We got up and did it, though. Lance found the vegetables in the fridge (i didn’t know what fennel looked like)(by the way, fennel is licorice)(i don’t like licorice), and cut them small enough to be fed into the juicer, and we made the day’s first three juices (breakfast, mid-morning, early afternoon). The juicer is messy messy messy. Fairly easy to clean, i guess. But a lot of work – probably about an hour to get our first 3 meals ready.

As indifferent as i am to the juices, the worst of the worst is the coconut water. Vomit in my mouth. We got the best-selling brand as it happens, so it’s not like we have some obscure drink that would be fixed if we just found the right kind. It’s just nasty. I quickly learned that holding my nose works. Needless to say, i do not recommend this stuff, despite the supposed healthful properties and electrolytes it conveys.

We bought enough of the coconut water to last 3 days, and by golly we’re sticking this out for 3 days at least. Although i will say, if we go beyond 3 days, we are not buying anymore of that drek. Regular water will probably work just as well.

I had heard that the first couple of days might be bad, but at some point you’re supposed to start feeling really good. I’m hoping we get there, because otherwise i doubt i’ll have the motivation to continue.

Tuesday

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 7:48 pm

Somehow it’s Tuesday, and i missed the Somethings this week. Oh well. Here are some random thoughts and goings-on in my life.

I’m reading Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lara Lee. I’m not very far, but it’s already pretty fascinating. It’s about girls growing up in 19th century China. The footbinding process is described in detail. Wow, i had no idea. Quiz: what is the ideal foot size to achieve? Answer: 7 cm. Yes, that was CENTIMETERS. 1 in 10 girls died in the process due to blood poisoning associated with walking on bound feet in order for the girls to break their toes. Ouch.

Had a wonderful visit this weekend with Lance’s parents, who came Friday and left Monday. We had people over and had an IMP night (bridge); went to Moe’s, which was on Mom’s list; did birthday stuff (cool gift, an actual stadium seat from the old Fulton County Stadium!); went to a Mudcats game (cold ice cream cones on a hot summer night are superb); went to see Crazy, Stupid, Love (very cute); and just had an all around good time visiting.

Today i sent Lance to the Farmer’s Market to buy fruit and vegetables sufficient for 3 days of juicing. This is our latest food fad we’re trying. Two weeks ago we watched a documentary called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Pretty fascinating. The show followed two guys doing a “juice fast” for 60 days. This means making your own juice and not consuming anything else, besides water. We’re not quite dedicated enough, or crazy enough, to go for 60 days. Neither are we as overweight as those guys were. So we’re going to try it for 10 days. Or at least 3 days, since that’s how much food we have on hand. I’ve done a fair amount of research; i hope it’s good enough. Optimistic result: try something new (i’m a sucker for new things), lose a few pounds, jump-start some healthier eating habits, introduce fresh juices into the diet on a semi-regular basis. More Likely Result: be hungry, lose some weight, gain it all back when it’s over.

I’m gearing up for a job change at work. It’s been in the making for some time, as i’ve been doing most of the work for several months. But the steps are being taken now and it will be official soon. I’m going to be managing my group of four people at work. It’s been six people for the summer, but when our two summer students go back to school things should get easier. I’m excited/nervous at the prospect.

Birthdays are over – Lance and i have birthdays a week apart. I planned to and never did blog about my perfect birthday weekend, but it was awesome. Friday off + new clothes + they-sure-do-give-out-good-babies-in-??-IL + bridge + weekend with friends + a day with my honey. I am once again the product of two primes (11×3), but in truth, i’ve always been the product of two primes (MomxDad). [Cue - "Awwww"]

Congress approved raising the debt ceiling today. At the last minute. I don’t think either side is happy, but everyone is putting a positive spin on it. At least the drama is over.

Lance started an awesome program today teaching bridge to home schoolers. Two hours blocks, twice per week. The first session went very well, according to my inside source. I’m excited for him; he’s a natural teacher, and this opportunity combines two of his passions.

Life is fun.
