Purpose

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 9:31 am

When i started this blog, it began as a way to blog about training for a half marathon.  It held me accountable in a way, and it was fun to just write about random things in addition to running.

I added bridge pages and recipes.  The recipes are very useful to me when planning a grocery list on the way home from work.  And bridge is my passion, though writing up hands is not yet seamless.

For awhile i wrote book reviews.  I’ve gotten away from that, though i’m not sure why.  I know plenty of my book buddies would probably like to see my opinions of various books i’ve read.

I started writing some also about religion and non-religion.  I want to write about that more, but i get bogged down in research and details, afraid to post something inaccurate.

The Somethings came along a year or so ago, and i’ve been fairly faithful to them.  Sometimes it is the only thing i post in a week, for weeks at a time.  I wonder if i would post more if i did NOT have the somethings as a weekly anchor.  They’re not always quick to write; there are a few questions that stump me every week.  Maybe i should just eliminate those to make it easier.

So, i’m asking.  What’s interesting?  I’m trying to figure out what i want to do with this blog o mine.  When i go for weeks posting nothing but the Somethings, i feel like i’m not doing enough.  And when things get to feeling like that, it feels like other things in life i’m not doing enough of, like exercising or eating right or cleaning or cooking or kissing my dog or studying bridge or reading.  I want it to be fun, for me and for you the reader, instead of just another thing i should be doing.

So, what’s fun?  I personally like the Grandma series and other theology related items.  Random stuff in the “life” category is usually fun.  The Somethings are hard to keep up with sometimes, but i like going back and reading the snapshot from a particular part of the year.  I like the race reports, too.

What do you like?

I like the book reviews, the random-things-in-life stuff, and I find your
religious posts fascinating… always interesting and well-thought out.

I look forward to reading your entries not because of which ones they are, but because they’re all clearly in your voice. It’s always you talking, and I get to know you better. So, please keep writing whatever YOU want. And when it feels more like a chore than a pleasure, it’s ok to not write anything.

I like your blog in general, I would just keep doing what you’re doing. But if some of the somethings are too hard to answer, just skip em that week, and add new ones that are relevant to what you are doing. No need to be rigid with it. Same with the theology ones, you don’t have to research them to death, it’s more your opinion that counts and that is based on what you know already. Sure it could be fun to research and change your opinion based on that, but if you feel like you always have to do it then it’s not fun. And if you just post what you are thinking, you might get comments that lead you to some fun research, after all whatever you say goes. Oh, and of course the race reports, do more races so we can get more reports :-)

I second Bill’s advice. I personally love reading the somethings each week. It’s fun looking forward to them. But what I love even more are your stories. When you tell about family gatherings, or getting stranded in a blizzard or your jerk friends won’t jump your car, or what happened at the latest bridge tourny. You tell stories very well. Do that more.

Obviously, I love the theology stuff, but it doesn’t seem like that spins your fan as much as other stuff, so don’t force it. When dumbass christians won’t tip a waitress on a Sunday, definitely write about it.

I never understand the bridge stuff, so it doesn’t matter to me that much; but, I love reading the race reports and I’m not a runner, so what that tells me is your just a fun writer.

Keep it up. And I’m still looking for this weeks “somethings” but if it’s more healthy for you to skip them for a week then, no big deal.

We have officially entered the month in which the next Twilight movie comes out, and Heather is very excited to watch it with you whenever that happens.

    Hi Audrey!

I like your book reviews. But since you, me and Ann have had a couple of lunches together, I enjoy hearing your perspective on things that we talk about: the Wake County education system, teaching our children about religion (or not), you know – random things. There are days that I write on my blog and think: I feel like Jerry Seinfeld – I’m just writing about nothing. But you’re blog says it on the front page: “I am podrey. And this is my site.”

I am an ADD blog reader – I skim over and need to have something catch my eye in the next few seconds to finish reading.

While I don’t particularly care to read any other book reviews, the ones in our little circle I do like to read.

Same with TV, movies, etc. It’s like we are sharing our tastes virtually.

And your non-religious stuff? I LOVE them.

But it’s the posts about how someone hit your car, or the buttheads who wouldn’t help you with your car, that I get a big kick out of. Those are the ones that keep this ADD-blog-reader in tune!!

I love reading anything that you want to write! I tend to be not as interested in the bridge and running articles, but that’s because I haven’t played serious bridge and I am not a runner. I still read those posts – as your brother said, that’s a testimony to your writing skills and ability to tell a good story. I miss your book reviews – I am especially interested in reading your reviews about the book club books. I love your Sunday Somethings, but I’m not sure that means much coming from me. I enjoy reading a snapshot of your life. I agree with the others – if you don’t feel like filling out a category one week, just skip it. If you don’t want to do the whole thing, just skip it. Your readers will miss you that week, but we forgive you for taking a break. The blog shouldn’t become a chore to you – hopefully, it will continue to be something that you enjoy doing. I like your other reviews, too. I agree with Cindy about being interested in reading reviews from a friend (versus random reviews about random things from some random person).

Keep writing, and I’ll certainly keep reading. I love when I open up my feed reader and see new posts from you. “Yay! Podrey has a new blog post!”
