I have seen this before, but it was still pretty astounding to me. Go to this site and enter your annual earnings to see where you fall on the “percentile of richness” in the world. It will make you want to give more of your money away, even if you think you don’t have much to spare.

I recently found the Foundation Beyond Belief, an organization that specializes in gathering money from atheists / humanists and distributing it to various charities that have been screened for both low operating costs (a standard charity evaluation) and complete lack of religious proselytizing. The goals are (a) to give money to worthy charities, (b) to attempt to provide the same sort of opportunity and possibly even peer pressure to donate that many religious people encounter every week at church, and (c) to reclaim the idea of charity as a non-religious act, since it has become so tightly associated with religious expression in this country. I ended up signing up to give them more money that I planned to every month. They are a new organization and they just sent out their first round of donations, it was really nice to see the (modest in the grand scale, but large to me) amounts that were being given away and to know that I was a part of that.
