I think this is a resolution i can stick with, and i’m creating more accountability to myself by publishing these goals.
I am hereby committing to the following race schedule for the first part of 2009. There are five races in this list, one per month, three 5ks, one 10k and one 15k. Jeff, you suggested a half marathon in March, and i did consider it. But i do remember saying to myself afterward, even when i was in better running shape, that i didn’t care for that much distance. 9.3 miles ought to be enough.
Yesterday i reread some of my running entries from 2007 when i was training for the City of Oaks Half-Marathon. Even though i know i wrote those entries, part of me cannot believe myself. There are statements like “8 miles this week was easier than the 7 miles i ran last week” and, from the race itself “i knew i only had 5 miles to go…” only 5 miles?!? Is there really such a thing as only 5 miles?
Reading those entries motivated me even more to get back to a place where i could fathom that running 5 more miles would be easy.
Jan 11, 5k Run for Young
This will be my first time participating in this race. It’s one of the only races available in January, and will be a great kickoff to the new year.
Feb 8, 5k Run for the Roses
I ran the Run for the Roses in 2004. My time then was 32:48 (i love the internet). It is one of the coolest runs i’ve ever done, primarily because i didn’t know that they weren’t kidding – every female who crosses the finish line gets a rose. You really are running for the roses. That was awesomely cool.
Mar 14, 5k Run for the Oaks
I ran this race once before as a recreational runner, so i do not have an official time for this race (and am thus unable to google it). I believe i ran this race in 2004. It is a downtown race, so it is relatively flat. One thing i remember about this race was that they were giving away baby trees.
Apr 4, 10k Cary Road Race
I have participated in the 5k part at least once before. Once was in 2004, where my 5k time was 32:49. A 10k is 6.2 miles, and the preparation for it should be fairly trivial, given i should be running all during the first quarter.
May 17 15k Biltmore/Kiwanis Classic
This race takes place in Asheville at the Biltmore Estates. I know about it because my dad is a Kiwanis Club member, and he has in the past helped organize this event. Ever since he has been running it, I’ve wanted to run in this race. But every time i ask, i’ve missed it. Well, not this year! I think the course will be a difficult but very beautiful one.

There is a 10 miler in Chapel Hill in late April, but I am jealous about the Biltmore Classic. That should be very cool.

Great line-up of races! And you have some good 5K times that will give you a good ‘run for your money’ to beat!! Don’t forget that SAS will pay for most of the Run for the Oaks race, so don’t sign up until it opens up at SAS.
I thought about having Cerina run the Run for the Roses. I think the idea of her getting a rose will be cool. I’m not committing yet…:-)
