Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii !!

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:20 pm

I was the only one of the three kids that was able to open presents with the family on Christmas morning. So Mom & Dad drove to Raleigh for the weekend so wii could do a Christmas celebration with my two brothers and their better halves. That was last night.

And wow, somehow my parents pulled it off and managed to get Wii’s for both me & Lance and my brother and his wife. (The other brother got his Wii last Christmas.) Amazing.

It was totally a surprise, too, because i thought wii’d already gotten our “big” gift (a grill) on Christmas Day in Asheville. But they had saved the biggest surprise for last. Another reason i didn’t suspect: the boxes were two different sizes. It wasn’t until Mom said “okay, Audrey & Lance open this one, Nathan & Heather open this one,” that i suddenly realized “SERIOUSLY?!?” Lance had on his “No Way” face. My brother and his wife were super excited, too.

Since it was our house, wii got to go ahead and set ours up and play some last night. Today i think wii’ll go out and get the Mario & Zelda games.

Woohoo!

And then there was one

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:19 pm

As i mentioned a few posts ago, on Friday we opened our home to two dogs, Sam(antha) & Ted, as a favor to a friend who had surgery a few weeks ago. At the time i posted, her dogs and our dog had seemed to accept each other’s existence, but weren’t exactly playing together.

Saturday night, my brother Nathan brought his dog, Dakota, into the mix, just for the evening. She’s a sweet girl, although she can’t hold her water that well.

It is now just after noon on Sunday, and we are back down to just our one sweet doggie, Nugent. Nathan of course took Dakota home with him when he left last night. What happened to Sam & Ted? Well, here are a few incidents that occured:

- Ted, the more dominant of the two visiting dogs, was pretty aggressive toward Nugent the entire time. Whenever Nugent would come near, especially under the table, Ted would growl at him incessantly.

- Sam & Ted both jumped onto the bed Friday night as we were getting ready for bed, fully expecting to be able to sleep there. I told them “Off” and “Down”. They both just growled at me and moved toward the center of the bed! Ted is smaller, so he was easier to push off, but Sam is probably 35 pounds, and she did NOT want to get off the bed. Once off the bed, she kept trying to get back on the bed. Even cleverly waiting until she thought we were asleep to jump up.

- Sam & Ted both barked at the slightest sounds all night long. My parents were staying in the next room — people get up in the night to use the restroom. Bark bark bark bark. “SHUT UP!”

- During that first night, Lance steadily got more and more sick to his head, allergy-like symptoms. They were pretty frigging bad at about 4:30 in the morning. He took some medicine, but was pretty miserable all day Saturday.

- Saturday night, because he was feeling bad, Lance crashed kind of early. At some point, Sam went in and climbed on the bed with him. We had decided the dogs would NOT be sleeping in the bedroom anymore and would instead be sleeping in their kennels. Again she would not get off the bed, only this time, Lance was lying somewhat helplessly on the bed. She snapped at me, and then scrambled “behind” Lance to hide herself from me so i couldn’t reach her. Lance happened to be facing away from me, so she was snarling, barking and snapping at me literally in front of his FACE. Pretty scary for him. Once off the bed, I brought her downstairs to kennel up and she refused to. She ran away from me for awhile until i got her leash. She let me put that on her (probably thought we were going for a walk!) and then i was able to get her into her kennel. Geez!

- Sam was really aggressive about food. Nugent’s kind of a slow eater (he’s not used to having other dogs around that will gobble up his portion), while Sam wolfed hers down. I realized what was about to happen, so i sort of stood guard by Nugent so he could eat in peace. Sam repeatedly tried to dart past me, despite my actively saying “No” and blocking her attempts.

- Ted was aggressive toward Nathan’s dog, Dakota, on Saturday night, in a similar fashion as how he is with Nugent. Under the table, during dinner, he went for Dakota big time, but missed and bit/scratched my Dad instead. Nothing serious, but come on!

- Twice Saturday evening, during the big family gathering, we found big puddles of dog pee around the house. I suspected Dakota at the time, but no one dog could be blamed since there were four of them. Dakota being the only dog with a known history of doing this, it probably WAS her. However…

- This morning, Lance was watching TV, and Ted nonchalantly walked up to the TV stand, lifted his leg, and emtied his bladder.

So, what happened to Sam & Ted? No, i didn’t kill them, though i was sore tempted. They are back with their mommy, who would have preferred to have a dogless recovery a little while longer, but thinks she can handle them. She has our number if she needs help delivering them to a kennel for a short stay.

I’m really not sure what happened here. If we hadn’t just recently had a VERY pleasant dog-sitting experience with another dog, i might think this was our fault somehow. Maybe we could have done more, like maybe we should have done more to “establish dominance” or something. We both LOVE dogs, and never imagined having this kind of trouble with them. Anyway, Lance’s allergies were bad enough that i’m not going to analyze it too much – we simply can’t keep them if one of us is going to be miserable.

And so, now we have only one doggie. And he is so sweet, never pees inside, never growls or snarls at us, listens when we say No, and loves to cuddle. I love him even more now that i see what he is not.

Peace

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:18 pm

Peace, calm, serenity. That is what i feel right now. My parents have left. The extra dogs are gone. There are no demands on me right now, and won’t be for at least another day. It feels so nice.

The past two days, hosting my parents, have been hectic. Getting the house ready. Cooking. Cleaning up while also trying to interact and be a good hostess. Cooking again. Getting my Dad’s help with projects around the house. Setting up the grill. Cooking again. And again.

Man, cooking for a crowd is a lot of work!

Right now, everything is silent and peacefull. In the living room, the presents Lance and i received are still strewn about. I’ll put things away and straighten up… later. In the guest bath upstairs, Dad was helping me install some extra towel racks. I will finish that project and put away the tools… later. The kitchen is mostly clean, but needs to be tidied from breakfast this morning. I will do that… later.

Right now, i am enjoying intermittently reading, surfing the web, and blogging about my weekend. I’ll get around to the rest of it after i catch my breath… and maybe take a nap.

Dogs, dogs, dogs

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:24 pm

The week before we left for the holidays, we dog-sat for one friend. She had one dog, who was sweet. Nugent loved having her around. At least i think so – they wrestled a lot, but it seemed good natured.

We returned to Raleigh the day after Christmas, and today, we have expanded our family once again for a short time. This other friend we are dog-sitting for has two sweet dogs. It seems they have made friends with Nugent. They’re not interacting as well — maybe “three is a crowd” applies to dogs too.

But, things are about to get even MORE interesting, because my family is at this very moment converging on our house. Two parents and two brothers, in 3 separate vehicles. And one brother is bringing his dog, too! So there will be even more furry friends to play with.

I think it’s good for Nugent to soclalize with other dogs, but i will be quite glad when this bout of dog-sitting is over. I already have one dog driving me crazy with dog hair, although i’ve been able to mostly get that under control. Three dogs, though, might end up being too much.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:23 pm

his was a Netflix recommendation. My friend Netflix figured i would like this movie because of the other types of documentaries i have rated highly.

They were right.

It was pretty neat. The story focuses on a bum (?) who befriends one of the flocks of parrots. (I call him a bum simply because he didn’t really have a home or a job and never paid for anything, but he was a nice, friendly, intellectual type guy.) He feeds them sunflower seeds, and they trust him and just swarm around him. He takes care of the injured ones and nurses them back to health.

We meet several of the parrots with distinctive personalities. It’s so neat to see the one parrot who shakes the branch he is standing on when he is excited. And the other parrot who dances when the guitar is played. And the one who is a peace-maker instead of a trouble-maker. Cool stuff.

Very interesting; i’d definitely recommend it.

Christmas Shoes

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:22 pm

I had several movies on my Christmas list that my mom could have chosen from once she chose to give me a movie. But, she likes to do things her way and took none of those suggestions, instead giving me Christmas Shoes. One look at the cover and i knew this was a movie that would make me cry.

I happen to enjoy a good cry now and then. It’s cleansing, therapeutic. This movie went above and beyond. I think i sobbed through half the movie!

It was very good. It focuses on two couples around Christmastime. One is facing marital troubles. In the other, the wife is waiting for a heart transplant. She dies, of course, and there are a lot of opportunities for heart-wrenching moments to catch on film.

The screenplay for this movie is actually based on a song by NewSong. I’ve reprinted it here. The song alone makes me cry, so it’s no surprise that the movie version made me sob buckets.

Thanks, Mom! This was a great movie gift.

Christmas Shoes, by NewSong

It was almost Christmas time,
There I stood in another line
Tryin’ to buy that last gift or two,
Not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was
A little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing ’round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old,
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn’t believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes
For my Mama, please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir,
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, “Son, there’s not enough here”
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do
Somehow I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down,
I just had to help him out
I’ll never forget the look on his face when
He said Mama’s gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir,
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Mama meets Jesus tonight

I knew I’d caught a glimpse of heaven’s love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Rock Band

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:25 pm

My 11-year old cousins received an X-box 360 and a few games for Christmas. By far the most popular game was Rock Band.

That shit is FUN!

As soon as Christmas dinner was over, the kids begged their dad to set up the game system. Their older brother arrived right then (after spending Christmas morning with his mom), and they started setting up their profiles. And then the rockin’ began.

There are 4 parts – bass, guitar, drums, & lead singer. The songs are popular, with a mix of songs you know and songs you don’t. Your band performs gigs at various locations, and you gain and lose fans based on how well you do. Almost everyone in my family was taking turns at the various instruments. Parents, aunts, uncles, but especially all the younger generations. We played that game from 2-6, then there was an evening activity for a few hours. Then when it was over, they all came to our house around 11, and we played it for several MORE hours. Addictive.

I understand a little now why people like karaoke. There’s a sort of bond that occurs when everyone is cheering you on, even though you suck. At least, that’s how it felt when i was singing. It was my family, and i’m comfortable around them, and it doesn’t bother me so much when they laugh at me. Because the next person to sing sounds just as bad. But there is a sort of comraderie that occurs when you have the guts to open your mouth and let people judge you. I’m still not volunteering to actually do karaoke, but being the lead singer in Rock Band was a pretty fun experience.

Enchanted

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:33 pm

Enchanted was just plain fun entertainment. I went into it knowing exactly what it was – a fairy tale with a “happily ever after” ending, and that’s exactly what i got. Amy Adams was perfectly innocent and naive as Giselle, and Patrick Dempsey, aka McDreamy, was great as the “real” Prince Charming. Susan Surandon was a great evil stepmother, although unfortunately there wasn’t ENOUGH of her – her role in the movie was very small, and the really evil parts were when she turned into an ugly old hag (who i’m sure was NOT played by Surandon).

I went to see this on Christmas Eve eve with my mom and 11-year old cousin. We had a grand time being girls. I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to have a fantastical/magical afternoon with a good girlfriend.

Busting Vegas by Ben Mezrich

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:32 pm

Busting Vegas is the second book by Ben Mezrich that covers the topic of MIT kids winning at blackjack. However, this book, while intriguing, merely sits in the shadow of the first best seller.

This book is advertised as non-fiction as well; however no dates are given for any of the events this time. And some of it feels a little… well, fabricated. My feeling is that while the story might be mostly true, a few liberties may have been taken in the telling.

The basic story is the same, but the techniques used to exploit blackjack have changed. This time, the students are not card-counters, and the methods they use fall more into a gray area that you might call cheating.

The basic math is, on average, the house has a 2% edge on you. If you are dealt an ace, that one hand actually had a 50% edge over the house. Thus, manipulating a deck so that you are dealt an ace would obviously be good for you. Similarly, because the dealer has to hit on so many marginal hands, manipulating the deck so that the dealer’s first hit is a face card is also very powerful.

The students practiced cutting cards, basically. They could cut an exact number of cards off of a deck. (In blackjack, players are offered the chance to cut.) If you knew what the 53rd card in the shoe was, you could count the number of cards as they came out. If a beneficial situation arises, you drastically raise your bet and wait for the good stuff to happen. Mathematically, it’s very sound. But in my opinion, it is pretty much cheating. Here are the three methods used:

1) Cutting to an ace – if the bottom card before the cut is an ace, cut an exact number of cards from the deck, then manipulate so you or a friend get the ace.
2) Card sequencing (usually to an ace) – keep track of a sequence of cards near an ace that comes out early, and is thus near the bottom of the discard pile. The bottom section of the pile is shuffled less frequently. With a dealer who shuffles precisely and predictably, you’ll be able to identify the sequence (with just a few cards in between) and thus know when the ace will fall.
3) Busting the dealer – if the bottom card before the cut is a ten, cut an exact number of cards from the deck, then manipulate it so the dealer gets the face card, especially if the dealer has a beneficial card showing, such as a 6. This one benefits all hands in play, not just one hand as in the previous two techniques, so the expected winnings are much higher.

I understand that the way the game is set up, the house has an edge, and that’s not “fair”. However, i don’t think that justifies cheating. Their argument is that they are just using their brains and skills to make sure they win. However, you could say the same thing for cheating at poker, with a technique like dealing off the bottom of the deck. That’s a skill, but if you are caught using it, you’ll get the shit beat out of you. Is it not the same thing? So you have a skill no one else has that will give you an edge, it doesn’t mean you should use it.

Near the end of the book, they also try to make the case that casinos are the ultimate Big Corporation and by stealing from the casinos, they were striking a blow on behalf of the Common Man. That’s just a bunch of rationalizing. Every person knows the casino has an edge, and people still willingly go inside and give up their cash. Yes, maybe it’s because of a dream of hitting it big and getting free money. But in general everyone knows the money they put in that slot machine is just gone.

Running a casino is a business. If it was set up so that it was “fair”, the casinos couldn’t make money. They would be foolish to offer any game where they didn’t have at least a slight edge.

But I digress.

The book was not as good as its predecessor. The writing was choppy and the team tension was not described well. Some incidents didn’t seem to fit in. And then there is the utter stupidity demonstrated when they continue with their scam way too long. While there was suspense about what would happen to them, i can’t say i was rooting for them since i didn’t think what they were doing was ethical.

Still, it was interesting to read about these techniques and get another glimpse at a high-roller lifestyle.

Right brain or left brain?

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 6:36 pm

This is FREAKY.

Click this link to take the Right Brain vs Left Brain test.

I initially saw the dancer turning clockwise, so i guess that means my right brain is more dominant.  Which surprises me, because i think the left-brain list describes me better.  At first i didn’t understand how anyone would see it any other way.  However, after staring for a bit and crossing my eyes, i saw her change direction and go counter-clockwise.  Then she kept switching back and forth.

Totally weird, because once you see her, it’s hard to imagine her going the other way!  Check it out.
