Nice morning

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:01 am

70 degrees!  That’s my guess for the temperature during my run this morning.  It was the most enjoyable run i’ve had so far.  I might be turning into a runner.

I need to go to the doctor, though, and talk about my foot.  I’m willing to put up with some pain in order to get through this race, but i’d like to know what i can do to minimize damage in the next 8 weeks.  I have no doubt that i’m doing damage, but there must be something i can do to slow it down.  This is a big goal, and i’m starting to believe i will actually finish this half-marathon, and i don’t want to quit b/c of a lame excuse like “my foot hurts.”

Healthy eating

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:00 am

I’m trying to eat better.  Today i didn’t have time to go home so I went to Chic-Fil-A.  Nothing there is really healthy, but their grilled chicken sandwiches aren’t so bad.  When i got inside, though, i decided what i REALLY wanted was one of their original sandwiches, they’re so much tastier!  But so much worse for you.  So, to compensate, i ordered the value meal that comes with coleslaw.  That’s healthy, right?

Ha.  Coleslaw isn’t healthy.  Bits of lettuce doesn’t make it healthy.  And what kind of thinking is this anyway?  Chicken sandwich meal plus slaw is MORE calories than just the chicken sandwich meal.

But this is how i rationalize ordering what i actually want.

Panhandlers

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:02 am

Exiting off of the interstate during one of your commonly traveled routes, you spot a panhandler.  Maybe you speed up, hoping to get through the light, but no.  The light changes to red, and you have to slow down and stop while a stranger with a sign stares at you.

I find this to be immensely uncomfortable.  I was taught not to give money to panhandlers.  And i continue to refrain from doing so, but for my own reasons.  The reasons i learned growing up were a) the money hurts instead of helps them b/c they spend it on booze or drugs instead of food, and b) the existence of career panhandlers who actually are not actually homeless.  Personally, i think b) is pretty unlikely because the patience and stamina it would take to make enough money to live on by begging probably represents a person with ambition and motivation enough to get by in a less humiliating way.

My personal reasons are 1) i already give money to reputable causes, and 2) i really dislike being emotionally manipulated.

And that’s what it is – emotional manipulation.  Here is a poor person on the side of the road, often with an amputated limb.  You’re supposed to feel pity for this person, and we do, which is fine and normal.  However, that pity will induce you to feel guilt unless you give them money.  Usually the person also has a sign indicating he is a Christian, “God bless,” or “Jesus cares” or similar.  which serves to even further manipulate you, as the implication is that God WANTS you to give money to this person.

The emotional manipulation seems very dishonest to me.

I’m aware that there exist people who are genuinely just down on their luck and need money, and maybe some of them are out there at the busy intersection.  But it feels like a scam.  So no matter how long they stare at me or try to talk to me through my closed window, i am going to lock my door and not give money to panhandlers.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:01 am

The Road — Cormac McCarthy

I read this book in three sittings; two short, one long.  It was a page-turner, a very quick read.  But a very hard story.

The setting is years after some sort of apocolyptic event, probably a nuclear war.  Everything is covered with ash, and fires are still rampant.  Nothing is growing, or living, except for a few humans who have managed to scavenge enough food to survive this long.

The story follows a father and son as they travel along the road through the bleak landscape.  It is about their relationship, and about love, and about what is truly worth living for.

I have strange feelings about this book.  It was very good and very well-written, as evinced by my not being able to put it down and by the intense reactions I had to it.  However it is definitely not one of my favorites – it left me depressed, though thoughtful.  I would recommend it, i think, with a disclaimer to please not hold me responsible if you’re in a bad mood when you’re done.

Week 2 Complete

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:03 am

Week 2 of half-marathon training is complete. I only did two of the three running workouts, but i did better about getting a couple of cross-training workouts in.

I’m supposed to do the long run on Saturdays, and i didn’t get to it this week until Sunday afternoon, but i’m proud to say i did it. It’s affecting runs for the rest of the week though – i can’t run on Monday and Wednesday like i normally do, so i’m pushing everything back a day.

The plantar fasciitis in my left foot did not bother me much at all during the run itself, but this morning it’s pretty vicious. I also got a couple of blisters on the balls of both feet from running yesterday – i think they may be the type that will help form calluses, but i’m not sure. Suffice to say, i’m wondering if these running shoes could be improved upon.

Empty house

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:03 am

Because of work, i couldn’t stay at the beach for the entire week, so i returned midweek while Lance and Nugent stayed with the family.  So i drove home alone.  It was a good drive, full of loud music and chatting on the phone, but i was glad when it was over and i was pulling into the driveway.  It’s always a comfort to return to your home and its familiar surroundings.

Or is it?  This is the first time i have experienced this house as totally empty.  Lance is usually there, too, but Nugent in particular has always been a total constant.  It’s strange that he’s not there!  I found myself listening for the pup’s feet clatter over the floor.  I checked his food bowl to see if he’d eaten.  I looked outside to see if he wanted to come inside.  I would catch myself doing these things automatically and marvel at how very quickly i have become acclimated to living with a pet.

Crabs

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:04 am

Went to the ocean for the first time yesterday. Got in the water, and it was nice floating over the waves. Then lance noticed there were lots of small jellyfish-looking entities in the water. I hadn’t noticed, but as soon as i saw them i started to freak out and felt itchy. I immediately wanted out of the water. Once on dry land, we were both still itchy – i looked inside my suit and saw sand, and figured that was why my skin was irritated. And then the sand moved.

Little crabs were all in our bathing suits!

Others in the family had been swimming without this complication, so i’m wondering if we were just coincidentally swimming in an area where there was a concentration of them. Not sure. But the story is now that i went to the beach and got crabs. Now all i need to do is dine at Dirty Dick’s Crab Shack and the trip will be complete.

It was probably a fluke, but i think i’ll stick to the pool from here on out. I’m definitely more of lake person than an ocean pereson.

(For anyone confused, these little crabs were ACTUAL crabs, and should not be confused with crab lice, aka crabs.)

Beach running

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:09 am

This morning’s run might be the first time i’ve ever motivated myself to run while on vacation. Usually the temptation to just relax is too great, but i overcame it and did my scheduled 3 miles. The beach is flat, so it wasn’t a hard run, and i got up early so the heat wasn’t too bad. And the beach breeze helped considerably as well.

One thing i did was try and figure out how my pace compares between early and later parts of the run. I ran exactly 15.5 minutes in one direction, then ran back to the beach house. It took a little over 16 minutes to get back, so i’m a little slower on the backside. Not too surprising, i suppose, since you tend to have more energy at the beginning. For me, though, the first mile is the hard one. Once i’ve settled into a rhythm i feel pretty comfortable, especially with a nice easy flat place to run.

My foot didn’t bother me much today, either, i’m happy to say. (-:

So, i’m still on track with the training. It’s going to get a lot harder before the end, but i think i can do it!

Why do fundamentalists hate Harry Potter?

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:08 am

We watched a documentary this week called Jesus Camp (lance called it “disturbing” in his blog post, which is a pretty good word for it), and there was random Harry Potter bashing in the middle of it. “If Harry Potter existed during Jesus’ time, he would have been executed!” is a pretty close quote. My mom also has expressed that she dislikes the Harry Potter books. I don’t think she’s read them, so i assume that someone has told her they’re not good Christian books.

Why is there this anti-Potter campaign in the fundamentalist churches? The quote above is pretty disturbing – why teach children that it is okay to execute anyone? I’ve done a little searching and here are the supposed reasons.

1. It teaches children to solve problems on their own without asking adults for help.

This is something my mom said, and i have seen it echoed in a few online resources on this topic as well. First of all, there are very wise adult witches and wizards in the Harry Potter world and it’s not entirely true that the students don’t seek guidance from them. Secondly, isn’t one of the things we should try to teach our children is how to solve problems on their own? Thirdly, isn’t much of children’s literature also guilty of this? How many children’s books are of the form “meet johnny, johnny gets involved in conflict, johnny runs to mommy to solve his problem”? Not many.

Most children’s books do have some sort of message they are imparting, and Harry Potter does, too. There are incredible lessons of friendship, loyalty, duty and trust. And good always triumphs over evil.

2. It gives children detailed instructions on how to do magic.

This is just riddikulus. Yes, i suppose there are a few incantations given, but they are silly. And besides, all the children in OUR world are muggles. Parents who read the books with their children could explain that.

3. It breeds an interest in the occult.

And? Children are like sponges – they are interested in anything they encounter. Mom & Dad telling them “don’t touch that” doesn’t work past the age of 6 or 7. Why do so many people believe we can protect our children by keeping them ignorant?

There is an occult subculture that believes in the supernatural. Harry Potter does not resemble them in the slightest.

4. Magic is bad.

My brothers were into Magic: The Gathering when they were younger. It’s a card game that as i understand it has different colors of magic. I don’t know much about it, but i recall my parents discouraging my brothers from playing it. They relented and allowed it as long as my brothers did not play with Black Magic.

So, killing an opponent in a make-believe game using your Black Magic cards is Not Okay, but you’ll allow your kids to watch violent movies like Terminator, Predator, and scores of other movies where real people are killed with real live weapons, like guns.

So, just to be clear, Harry Potter is teaching kids how to use Dark Magic, which they’ll never actually be able to do. And Harry Potter is not okay. But other movies that show people killing other people with guns are fine. Even though they are essentially teaching kids how to use guns, which they could actually obtain in their life.

My brothers and i were also discouraged from playing Dungeons and Dragons and from reading Lord of the Rings.

Frankly, i view that as simply discouraging imagination.

What is magic? What about The Incredibles? What are superpowers, if not magic? What about Cinderella, that favorite children’s story? Why is that magic okay, but Harry Potter’s magic is not? Like The Incredibles, the characters in Harry Potter are born with abilities and they have learned to control them and are trying to save the world. We embrace superheroes like Superman and the Incredibles, but not Harry Potter.

Conclusion – i know a vast majority of people love Harry Potter, and i’ll be preaching to the choir for the most part. I just think it’s utterly riddikulus that any group would be so threatened by a figment of imagination.

Xenu

Category: Uncategorizedpodrey @ 10:08 am

Scientology has been in the news in the past couple of years, particularly since Tom Cruise has been so vocal about it. My impression up til now is that they are just another crazy religion. But no, i have new information; they are much worse than that!

Once you have been a scientologist for long enough, and been elevated up through enough of their levels, and contributed obscene amounts of money, then the most secret beliefs will be revealed to you. You will learn of the alien dictator Xenu, who once ruled the Galactic Confederacy. He was faced with an overpopulation problem on his many planets, and so lured BILLIONS of people onto spaceships, with the help of psychiatrists, by drugging them with alcohol and glycol. They then brought them to Teegeeack (now known as Earth), piled them around volcanoes, and detonated hydrogen bombs. Almost all the people were killed, but their essence still exists in the form of spirits that can negatively affect you today.

All i can say is, Wow.
